Shortly after this loss, Rosa is tasked with covering a college dormitory suicide for a small newspaper. Throughout the day, Rosa experiences persistent headaches, culminating in an unexpected visit from a ghost named Joey Mallone in her apartment. Joey informs her that she, like her aunt, possesses the ability to communicate with spirits and help them move on from the earthly realm. Despite her reluctance, Rosa reluctantly accepts this revelation and embarks on a mission to resolve a case involving a haunting at a dog park. She unravels the story of a young girl who, along with two close friends, had inadvertently summoned a restless ghost with a Ouija board.

 Tragically, two of the friends had already taken their own lives. Rosa learns how to assist the lingering spirit and ultimately helps it find peace. The third girl also attempts suicide but is saved and taken to the hospital, where Rosa encounters her and the restless ghost. She successfully aids the spirit in moving on. After these events, Rosa seeks answers from Joey about why her aunt Lauren had abandoned her medium abilities. Joey reveals that Lauren chose to raise Rosa after her parents died in a car accident. Contemplating this and facing stagnation in her writing career, Rosa decides to follow in her aunt's footsteps and become a full-time medium.

Gameplay:

Rosa, the central character of the series, resides in modern-day New York City. Raised in foster care following the early demise of her parents and her aunt's institutionalization, Rosa is an introverted and reserved individual who struggles with communication. She initially pursues a career as a writer and journalist but quickly embraces her newfound role as a medium. As the series progresses, Rosa's determination and resolve to help spirits move on grow stronger, even leading to multiple restraining orders as a consequence of her work. She can be defiant and occasionally dismissive of Joey, but her commitment to doing what is right always prevails.

Joey, the spirit guide of the Blackwell family, originally hails from the Roaring 20s and worked in a tailor shop before meeting a tragic end at the hands of mobsters. His connection to the Blackwell family, starting with Rosa's grandmother, involves an intriguing and undisclosed chain of events. Joey is characterized by his dry and sarcastic demeanor, often lamenting the eternal and thankless nature of his role as a spirit guide. He is bound to his medium and cannot stray more than 30 feet from her at any time. Despite his outward cynicism, Joey genuinely cares for the Blackwell women he is bound to and does his best to protect them in times of danger.

Lauren, Rosa's aunt on her father's side, serves as the protagonist of the second game in the series. She was a medium during the 70s in New York City. Lauren, while somewhat resigned to her life as a medium, retains her amiability and possesses a charm that allows her to extract information more readily than Rosa. Lauren had initially vowed to quit being a medium and adopted Rosa after her brother's untimely death. However, she ended up being institutionalized for decades before passing away at the beginning of the first game. In a comical twist, she reveals in the final game that she had attempted to prepare Rosa for life as a medium by dressing up her cherished teddy bear to resemble Joey.
