Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII Introduction:

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII is an action-packed flight combat video game available on various platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. Developed by Ubisoft Bucharest, it was released in North America and Europe during the second fiscal quarter of 2006. The game immerses players in the World War II era, featuring an impressive roster of 46 different fighter planes from that period. Players assume the role of a fictional squadron participating in pivotal World War II events. The game offers online multiplayer support for up to 16 players, enabling head-to-head and cooperative battles.

The Wii version of the game was launched in March 2007, while the PlayStation 3 version was released as a launch title in December 2006 for North America and in March 2007 for other regions. The Japanese version arrived in July. Notably, the PS3 edition introduced new missions, a 16-player online mode, and support for the PS3 controller's motion-sensing capabilities.

Gameplay:

It's worth mentioning that the European Windows version employed StarForce protection, and at least one American Windows release also utilized this protection system.

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII spawned a sequel, titled Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII, which was released in 2007.

An arcade version of the game, developed by Global VR, was introduced in 2008. This arcade cabinet initially featured a sit-down model with flight stick and throttle controls, along with a seat thumper to simulate the sensation of being under fire. In 2011, an upright arcade model was released.

In the game, players belong to a squadron known as the "Angels of Dunkirk," consisting of the player (referred to as "Captain"), Tom ("the shield"), Joe ("the mechanical wizard"), and Frank ("the hunter"). While the player's name remains undisclosed, some fellow pilots address them as "Captain." A notable German Ace, encountered during the Battle of Britain, taunts the squadron and reappears in the final mission in 1945 Berlin, leading the Nowotny Squadron (Jagdgeschwader 7), a group of elite German aces piloting experimental jet planes. The player eventually shoots down the Ace after he poses a threat to Tom.

The game's storyline may vary slightly between consoles. Generally, it follows the Angels of Dunkirk squadron through various World War II battles and missions, including the Battle of Britain, the Liberation of Paris, the Battle of Midway, D-Day, and the Battle of Berlin. However, in the Wii and PS3 versions, the story was enhanced with added character development, pre-level narration, and in-game dialogue, enriching the overall experience. Notable changes include Tom being revealed as Joe's brother-in-law instead of a random pilot saved from a German fighter squadron, and Joe getting shot down during the D-Day mission.

The game's narrative begins in 1940 Britain, where American pilots, including the player, volunteer with the Royal Air Force to combat Germany. The player, known as the Captain, trains alongside squad mate Joe and rescues a fellow pilot named Tom from a German attack, discovering that Tom is Joe's brother-in-law.

The Captain, along with their squadron (Tom, Frank, and Joe), participates in battles against the Germans, including the defense of Allied forces at Dunkirk and repelling German attacks on Britain, which culminate in an intense aerial battle over London against a German air ace. Subsequently, the squadron is deployed to North Africa, where they provide reconnaissance and engage in fierce combat against German forces in the Libyan desert.

Following their missions in North Africa, the squadron returns to the United States to assist in training American pilots. While stationed in Hawaii, they respond to the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and play a vital role in repelling the attackers. With the United States fully engaged in the war against Japan, the squadron embarks on various missions in the Pacific, including destroying a Japanese convoy in the Coral Sea, defending an airfield during the Battle of Midway, and participating in the fighting for Guadalcanal by repelling Japanese amphibious assaults and eliminating a Japanese battleship.

Final Words:

Finally, the squadron is tasked with assaulting the main Japanese South Pacific base in Rabaul. They provide cover for US bombers as they destroy an airfield before proceeding to dismantle the remainder of the Japanese base.
