Sniper Elite III, released in 2014, is a third-person tactical shooter stealth video game developed and published by Rebellion Developments. This game serves as a prequel to its 2012 predecessor, Sniper Elite V2, and stands as the third entry in the Sniper Elite series. A direct sequel, Sniper Elite 4, was subsequently launched in 2017.


Set approximately three years before the events of Sniper Elite V2, the game's narrative revolves around the actions of OSS officer Karl Fairburne during World War II in the North African conflict. His mission is to thwart the development of a dangerous new weapon and eliminate the rogue Nazi commander responsible for its creation.

Gameplay:


The sniper rifle takes center stage as the player's primary weapon, although a variety of additional weapons, such as submachine guns and pistols (with the option for suppressed or unsuppressed usage based on the situation), are available. Players can also utilize hand grenades, tripwire booby traps, two types of land mines, and dynamite. Binoculars play a key role in tagging enemies, revealing their positions and movements. Players can create small fires to divert enemy attention or detonate explosives strategically. Furthermore, the player-character can hold their breath while aiming to ensure precise shot placement. A red icon appears in the scope, indicating the anticipated point of impact. Weapon customization is possible by discovering weapon parts throughout the game, allowing players to tailor their armament in the pre-deployment menu, which also facilitates equipment loadout adjustments.

Stealth mechanics have been overhauled, with an eye icon conveying the player's level of detection by enemies, while enemy soldiers exhibit a circular meter above their heads to indicate their alert status. Players are periodically compelled to change positions to avoid detection, with a white ghost image marking their last known location if spotted; enemy soldiers will conduct searches in the vicinity either individually or in groups. Similar to the previous game, loud noises can be used to mask sniper shots, and players have the option to sabotage generators to generate noise.

The game introduces a points system that rewards players for actions such as stealth close-combat takedowns and using traps to eliminate enemies. These points contribute to the player's progression to higher ranks. Exploring the game map allows players to discover special reward items, including collectors' cards, and unlock "sniper nests" integrated into the game environment. Journal pages provide additional backstory details about the game's events.

The X-Ray kill cam system from Sniper Elite V2 is retained, but it has been expanded to offer a visual representation of not only the internal structure at the point of impact but also the cardiovascular, skeletal, and muscular systems. Players can target vehicles and even shoot at their engines to disable them, facilitating their destruction.

The game's story begins in June 1942 during the Battle of Gazala, with American sniper Karl Fairburne participating in British efforts to prevent Erwin Rommel and the Afrika Korps from seizing the vital port city of Tobruk. Fairburne eliminates several German artillery positions but is forced to abandon his comrades when the enemy captures the city. Despite this setback, his performance in the battle catches the attention of British Naval Intelligence, who enlist him to hunt down General Franz Vahlen, a favorite of Hitler's rumored to be working on a top-secret weapon.

Fairburne's journey takes him to the Gaberoun oasis in Libya, where he assassinates several German and Italian officers at a supply and logistics outpost while searching for intelligence on Vahlen. Although he uncovers only a document revealing the project's name, "Project Seuche" (German for "plague"), Naval Intelligence subsequently assigns Fairburne the task of rescuing one of their agents captured while gathering information on Vahlen's work. This agent is held at Fort Rifugio, a POW camp formerly occupied by the British during Operation Compass. In exchange for his help in capturing the German-held Halfaya Pass, the Long Range Desert Group agrees to transport Fairburne. He infiltrates the enemy camp and destroys several Flak 88 anti-aircraft guns.
